Via Po Via Po Torino, Via Po

One of the main Torino’s streets, was built during the second urban enlargement in 1663 was projected by Amadeo di Castellamonte and Carlo Emanuele II di Savoia. Via Po joins piazza Vittorio Veneto with piazza Castello, it has the typical city porches, where you can find shops and ancient palaces. Porches were made by Ferdinando Bonsignore and Ernesto Melano, thought to consent a quiet and covered promenade to the king, who was able to go from Piazza Castello to piazza Vittorio.
On the streets you can find a lot of book shops and the historical Università di Torino, funded in 1404. Even the Caffè Florio is located on this street, where intellectuals and politician was used to have a meet during the XIX century.
The streets ends in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II which was named piazza d’Armi until 1825, in conjunction with new Borgo Nuovo edification.
The street was also an important passage between the city center and the Po. There’s a bridge which crosses the river and goes to Casale Monferrato, the street was named Contrada del Po at the beginning to become then via Po in the following century.
