G55 New Gospel
The genre “gospel” is in the 21st century as diverse as “rock” or “pop”. Many European choirs are familiar with “Oh happy day” and other classics. But unless you know where to look it is difficult to find new repertoire and learn about the development of this genre. The “urban gospel” is influenced by the modern r’n’b, soul and hip hop music. At this discovery atelier we explore this style and work with it in the choir. We also sing and look at the differences between modern European and modern American gospel music.
Joakim Arenius (SE)
He is the former director of Joybells, Europe’s oldest gospel choir. In 2004 he founded Praise Unit, whose urban and contemporary sound has inspired both American gospel artists and community choirs in Europe.
