He received his initial musical education at the Limburger Domsingknaben and in the State Youth Choir of Rheinland-Pfalz (LJC). He studied music education and German language at Mainz and choral conducting with Wolfgang Schäfer in Frankfurt. He also took courses with Robert Sund, Georg Grün and Simon Halsey and was assistant of the conducting professors at the Music Academy in Mainz.
Since its foundation Jan is conductor of the male ensemble Camerata Musica Limburg, which has won 1st Prizes in Germany and abroad (Frankfurt, Tours, Maasmechelen, Bremen, German Choir competition 2010), was one of the worldwide selected choirs at the 9th World Symposium on Choral Music in Argentina and will be guest at ACDAs National Convention in Dallas 2013.
Jan teaches choral conducting at Music Academies in Freiburg and Rottenburg and is conductor of the university choir in Darmstadt where he conducts the big choir symphonic works. Since 2009 Jan has been the conductor of the HARMONIE Lindenholzhausen male voice choir and art director of the International HARMONIE FESTIVAL in Limburg-Lindenholzhausen.
Jan is interested in all kinds of choral music: form high level a cappella programmes (including music written for Jan and his ensembles) to preparations like Mahlers 2nd Symphony, baroque opera or contemporary music to musicals by Loewe or Operette by Offenbach to choir theatre or choir improvisation and concerts with choir and big band. He prepared choirs for conductors like Gustavo Dudamel, Proinnsias O´Duinn, Michael Hofstetter, Mathias Breitschaft, Caspar Richter, Wolfgang Schäfer and Peter Ruzicka and served for choirs and singing weeks in Italy, Austria, Argentina, Bulgaria, Turkey, Island and Venezuela.
Jan is a member of the artistic committee of the Hessian Sängerbund and member of the board and the music commission of the European Choral Association - Europa Cantat.
